Pridelands – Valley of the Great Kings
Rafiki, the Prideland Shaman
Ahadi, the Prideland King
Rehani, a wascally ‘weyna
Shetani, a wandering rogue
Mufasa, a prince of Pride Rock
Chioh, a visiting King
The clouds gather over the valley, blocking the rays of the sun. Rafiki is down from his tree, pacing in the grasses and muttering to himself. Where was that infernal bird?! He was supposed to deliver his message to the king days ago! But Rafiki has learned from this - never trust a hornbill with a big beak. ... yeah.
Having left Chioh and his niece on the more southern edge of the valley, Ahadi is heading home through the valley when he catches sight of his shaman. "Rafiki," he calls out, the name rushing past his teeth in a sigh of relief. "Oh thank goodness. Just the creature I need to speak with."
Yuf, yuf, jump, yuf. It's hard for such a small cub to see over long-grass, and until he reaches the shorter greener grass closer to the middle of the Valley, occassionally his head can be seen popping up and up again as he gets further along. Of course, once he breaks through the grass he's practically right next to Ahadi and Rafiki, and once he's realized where he is .....and the hugeness that is Ahadi's lion King self, he gasps and puffs into a ball. "AHHHH!"
Rafiki is about to address the King, who he greets with widening eyes and sharp intake of breath - but the entrance of the hyena cub and his scream breaks his concentration. Ecch. Young things. The mandrill lifts his staff to poke at Rehani. "Away wit you, jana," he says with reserved anger.
The lion blinks, startled, and creases his brow. "Young one, you'd best be getting home. It wouldn't be wise to linger here." Not with the leaders of two different prides all inhabiting the valley for a time, most likely stressed and tense. No, a hyena cub would not thrive in that environment. He seems rather tired, and he licks his lips to continue speaking with Rafiki. "A number of lions have been cursed by what have been described as 'evil ghosts'," he says, his words low and intended solely for the shaman.
Poked! Indignity! He may be afraid of Ahadi but Rafiki doesn't scare him....as much. A stick! Rehani bites it, and tug tug tugs. Rrr, rrrrrrr. RRRRrrr! He pully pulls his little fuzzy body backwards, little strong teeth clamped tightly on. As a cub, the little hyena doesn't have his underbite - yet. But he's also very, very small. A little puff of hair with teeth and eyeballs. Not even his stripes have all grown in! But he's fiesty! Rrr! Tug pull yank! He's so distracted, he hardly listens to giant lion Ahadi - an unwise move.
Rafiki pulls back on his stick, his heavy brows lowering. "Ondoka, jana," the mandrill says again in a louder, and harsher tone. He yanks on the stick and tries to beat Rehani's head with it if he gets it free from the young hyena's strong jaws. "Go *HOME*."
Ahadi is exhausted, and while somewhat frustrated by his inability to speak with Refiki in private, is also somewhat amused by the scene before him. Maybe he should help? "Child," the king rumbles, raising his voice a touch, "Show some respect for your elders."
Watching the Ahadi and the mandrill from a respectable distance is a dark shape with green eyes half-lidded against the setting sun. Shetani wishes that the sky was clearer. If it was, he might not be so wet from crossing the river the hard way. All the mud and silt stuck to his fur helps the adolescent blend in with his surroundings as he adopts a seat in a patch of tall elephant grass, still and silent as a stunted acacia.
Thud thud whup! Rafiki manages to wrest and beat him with the stick, which causes him to fall over with a yelp. He holds his poor hurt thinker, and, apparently remembering Ahadi is there - because he's directly above him, yells again. "AHHHHHH! Don't eat me!!" oh goodness. "I can't find my brother!!
"He isn't *'ere*, jana," Rafiki scowls down at the hyena cub, throwing his staff slightly into the air to regrip it in his gnarled fist. "So scat." Looking to the King, he does his best to ignore Rehani. "I know. I spoke to it."
"It?" The king parrots, also determined to ignore the cub for the time being. "The king of the Palandasya lands has claimed that there is not one, but -two- ghosts. One came to him and told him to banish one of his subjects, and when he refused, placed a curse upon him. The second came a time afterwards and cursed him out of what I would guess to be pure spite. But you've -spoken- with one!" Ahadi exclaims, his brows knotting together in thought. "What have you learned?"
"No, your big smelly self is here," snaps Rehani at Rafiki, and, determining Ahadi is not going to eat him, he rolls back onto his paws and bristles. "Hell-O, haven't you seen him?! It's been two days and he hasn't come home!" the cub complains, "I was following his smell through here but it's gone NOW, your stinky monkey probably smelled it all up!"
Rafiki bristles, ignoring the cub. "Talmaleki was once a king of de'Rock, but 'e'as been removed from de'Tree, which has kept 'im from de'stars." Rafiki lifts his stick slightly, pointing to the skies overhead. "I can only tink dis 'as angered 'im. 'e says 'e wis'es to learn from de'living, but does so by putting dese curses on dem. 'e tried to do dis to me. And yes, dere are o'ders. I did not speak to dem or see dem, but I 'eard Talmaleki speak to dem, in de'world between worlds."
Trotting in from the the savannah comes Prince Mufasa, only a tiny bit tired from an afternoon of galavanting around as if he owned everything (which he just may believe he does). He does take pause, however, upon spotting the scene playing out between some hyena, Rafiki and his dad. Part of him wants to rush ver and see what's going on, but another, louder part cautions that he might possibly get in trouble for it, so he elects instead to wait it out, sitting himself down not twenty feet from Shetani, whom he does not see.
The ignoring is riling Rehani, and he squints his little bead eyes. "Fine," he huffs, "You just keep talkin' about kings and trees and stars and whatever. Don't help, see if I care." and off the little puffball whirls, trotting away - but he's not looking where he's going, he's still glaring at Ahadi and Rafiki, and he whops right into Mufasa. "AAAHHHHH!" he yells in suprise, and skitters blindly right into Shetani who is nearby. In shock, he screams yet again. "AAHhhHAHHHHHH! This place is full of giant lions!!" determining Mufasa might be a little safer, he backs up towards him.
"Talameki," Ahadi mutters, thoughtfully. And then the hyena starts screaming again. And again. He winces, his lip curling in anger. "Will. You. BE. SILENT!" The lion roars, not aware that his son is nearby, and releases all his distress and worry and frustration at this whole 'ghost' ordeal in this one mighty bellow.
Rafiki grips his staff tighter, cringing at the King's roar even though it is not meant for him. "Dat is all I know, Sire."
Shetani cups his ears, straining to listen. It's futile at such a great distance, and he knows it, but that doesn't stop him from trying to filter out the valley's heartbeat. Beneath the buzz of the cicadas, he detects movement behind his left flank and, slowly, with the carefully measured strides of a skilled predator, begins closing in on it. He's spent the past few weeks in Palandasya, preying on only the smallest antelope available. Of course, this all before little Rehani plows straight into him and sends a flock of startled starlings spiraling into the sky. He flashes his teeth at the youngster and snarls in retaliation, the sound drowned out by Ahadi's bellow.
Moving like a shadow in the grass, Chioh makes his way towards the sound of the roar. Even though these weren't his lands, he still felt obligated to see what was going on, and if he needed to help or not. When he reached the scene...and saw nothing going in besides talking, he shakes his head slightly and turns to walk away. That's when he sees Shetani and he starts to head for the lion. Mumbling under his breath.
Mufasa, of course, saw Rehani coming. But he didn't expect the cub to run right into him. And he *certainly* didn't expect Shetani to suddenly be there, and joins Rehani with a scream of his own. Just as the hyena is backing up towards him, he is backing away from the maneless lion, not *too* panicked. After all, dad is right there, and Shetani would have to be stupid to try something in front of the king. Right? Right?? "You, uh, youe got really big teeth," Mufasa says to Shetani, possibly hoping to dissuade him from having royal snack.
At Ahadi's roar, Rehani pins himself to the ground, silent, eyes huge. As it seems he's back to paying attention to the ape, the hyena scoots directly behind Mufasa, as if for protection. "Yeah, well, so do you, fuzzy!" the hyena informs the cub, "What do you eat for breakfast? Male wildebeest? Bull elephants?!"
