Palandasya - Majestic Kopje
Characters Present:
Chioh, Palandasya King
Hukumu, Palandasya King
Tunu, daughter of Hukumu
Shetani, a rogue (spoofed)
For the past few days, Hukumu has been away on royal business, carefully treading the territory between borders. After all, the Ahadi's lions are not the only pride in the vicinity; there are others, nameless and faceless, whose customs he has been trying to memorize. Imagine his surprise to learn upon his return that a rogue has taken up residence in the kopje. Never mind all this talk about curses. He'll believe it when he sees it. "Chioh!" he roars from the outside, his voice as loud and throaty as ever. "Brother! I demand an explanation!"
Chioh is about answer Tunu when his brother comes into the den and roars his anger. He does a small blow of air to blow some mane out of his eyes and he stands up. Slipping his paw out from under Tunu as he looks over at his brother. He turns his demonic red eyes onto his brother and says, "Explaination of what? Why the rouge is here? Why I look like this? Why the cubs are freaked? Or something else?" His black fur shadows him in the den, only his red eyes shine.
Tunu hops up at her father's voice and Chioh's stirring. "DADDY!" she cries out in both excitement and need. He'll fix it. Chioh was good for cuddles, but action? For action you went to Hukumu. She runs out of the kopje's cavern, making a bee-line for his legs to rub.
"Are you so inept," Hukumu starts, growling low, "that you can't deal with a simple-" But the remainder of the sentence never comes. The elder of the two kings is so stunned by what he sees that he's stopped in his tracks, lingering at the kopje's entrance. Shetani, having heard the roar, wisely retreats to where he won't be noticed by Hukumu. With any luck, the monarch will be so upset with the Palandasya's /other/ visitor that he'll forget all about him. Indeed, it's only when he feels his daughter bump against his legs that the spell is broken. "... So the stories are true."
Chioh nods slightly as he steps into the light that comes in through the hole in the entrance of the den. With his black fur illuminated as much as it can, he looks over at Hukumu, his red eyes glowing less now. "Yes, the stories are true brother. I have been cursed. You will never guess who graced me with these red eyes." He looks behind him at the leonines in the den. He looks over at Tunu, and then back into Hukumu's eyes.
"It wasn't me!" Tunu pipes up, remembering Adhama's insistence of her guilt. "It was the wind voice!" She sits between her father's paws, leaning against one as she looks up at him, ears folded back. Fix it, Daddy. Please?
"Of course it wasn't you, honeytree," is what Hukumu's look seems to say, but he offers Tunu no words of comfort or reassurance - only the warmth of his body. His gaze shifts
Chioh says only one word, "Olumide." His black tail flicks in the shadows as he looks at Hukumu. That one word should tell him everything.
Hukumu snarls, "That's impossible!" He steps over Tunu, shielding the youngster in his shadow as if guarding her from Chioh. Or what once was Chioh. "Olumide's meat has rotted, his bones ground to dust. We saw to that ourselves."
Chioh shakes his head slightly as he says, "His body maybe dead. But his ghost is still around. He came to the den, after one of his compainions cursed me with fur the color of the night sky. He cursed me with the eyes of a demon's wrath, and Uzuri with something. As of late, Uzuri's curse was lifted. But, I am still cursed."
Tunu's ears slick further back, and her eyes widen at he explanation. Sure, she's sad that her sister was cursed, but why was Uzuri's lifted and not her own? "I'm cu-...sic-..." The cub glowers and growls with frustration. "I'm not -.." She winces and presses her face against Hukumu's leg. Gaah.
"Have you not washed yourself in the lake to clean your body of the taint?" Hukumu ventures a step closer. "What's wrong with my daughter?" Meanwhile, Shetani's eyes, watching from the shadows, glint a cool but bright green. He's waiting.
Chioh looks at Hukumu with an expression that can be read as -Are you stupid?- He shakes his head slightly as he says, "I've bathed in the lake, in the stream, I've even been bathed by the cubs. The black will not come off, Hukumu. It is a curse." He shakes his head a bit more and then looks at his brother with his red eyes. "One thing the ghost that gave me this black fur told me. He told me to rule by fear. This is what is bringing on my appearance."
"You let them *lick* you?" asks Hukumu in a dry, raspy whisper. And then, he explodes. Not in the sense that his guts expand outward and splatter the cool, damp walls of the kopje, but in the sense that he closes the distance between himself and his brother with both his claws and his teeth flashing. "You fool!"
Tunu DUCKS, snapping her eyes shut and folding her ears as tightly to her head as she can. There's only one lion she's truly afraid of - well, one living lion. And that's Dad.
Chioh doesn't move from his spot as his brother comes closer to him. Infact, he stays quite cool under his mane and he says, "Why would I be called a fool? Tell me that much, then I might consider it."
Hukumu does not dare strike Chioh, for the same reason he is furious with him. "Only a fool would let the cubs anywhere near you as you are," he hisses. "What if it spreads? What if it swallows us all? Why did you not appease him?!"
Chioh growls lowly as he says, "He told me to exile one of our own pride memebers. I could not do that, so in return he has cursed me. Your daughter has been around me like this, she hasn't changed color, she was cursed when she was alone by the very same ghost. My son han't been cursed from being around me, neither has Uzuri or Sarafina. The curse doesn't spread, it just clings to the animal that it was given to." With that, Chioh walks past his brother, and heads for the outside, "Right now, I'm going to go patrol the borders. If you want to keep on talking, follow. If not, leave me alone."
Tunu gulps a bit. "I made it an-.. mad at me, Daddy," Tunu answers after Chioh has left in his huff, head slung low and tail tucked in. Don't you be mad at me too.
Hukumu watches Chioh go, every muscle in his body tense as a snake poised to strike. It would be so easy to jump on his brother as he retreats, and even easier to close his jaws around his neck after breaking his back beneath the weight. He'd taste the blood on his lips and wash it over his tongue, feel it trickle down his throat... and then... then... "You what?"
Tunu winces, and tries to press herself lower to the ground while still remaining on her paws. "I made the wind voice mad at me. It didn't li-.. LI-" She growls a little to herself, and squints at the ground. "I was sin-.." With a sigh, the cub closes her eyes and flops to her belly. Nn.
"Daddy will fix it." If it's exile Olumide wants, then it's exile Olumide will get. Hukumu doesn't understand why Chioh invited the dead king's wrath into the Palandasya, and it's likely that he never will. As much as he loves his lionesses, a sacrifice must be made for the sake of the greater good. "Daddy promises."
Tunu flicks and ear and opens one eye to look at her father, and then the other. It's the most reassuring thing she's heard since this happened. Sure, her mother and sisters have all sworn they'd help her get better. But Daddy? Daddy was going to fix it. She wouldn't have to worry. A small smile grows across her face, and Tunu gets to her paws to pad to Hukumu again, her intention to nuzzle his paw, keeping her belly close to the ground.
Hukumu lowers his body to the cavern floor and, curling, wraps himself around Tunu. He's had a long journey, and needs to recover before he can devise a plan of action. "I don't want you going anywhere near your Uncle Chioh," he grumps. "Do you understand?"
Tunu flicks her ears forward. But she likes Uncle Chioh! Frowning, the girl nods. "O-.. Al-.." Her ears fold back again as she scowls. "Yes, Daddy."
"Good." Resting his large head across the back of Tunu's neck, Hukumu closes his eyes, unaware of Shetani's presence mere meters away. The youth has kept still and silent throughout the duration of the discussion, and it doesn't look as though that's about to change. He's happy where he is. Alone and ignored.
Tunu curls up with her father, because it's a rare chance to do such a thing. Soon, she's off to sleep as well.
