The problem with having an herbivore group on KaV is that what we have is kind of a lion-centric MUCK from its inception. What sets this place apart from other MUCKs is that we started with -three- lion prides, all offically recognized and populated. If any of these three prides gets inactive (and I'm sorry to say they have, to an extent), it becomes a problem for the MUCK as a whole. That being the case, lions are our top priority. We can talk about how great it is to have a diverse balance of species, because it's true. It is great. But we can't focus on diversity and also on lions at the same time.
The other problem with RPing ungulates is that it's hard to RP reasonable interaction between them and carnivores. A lot of the time it's awkward. The carnivore may be thinking "I should really try to attck this guy," or at least "I shouldn't be talking to a prey animal." But to attack or shun is rude and often no fun. Another pitfall, though, is when everyone is friendly with everyone else, all the herbivore PCs are protected from predation by kingly law, and the competitive aspect of nature is neglected. I've found it discouraging and draining at times to have to come up with a justification for my carnivore character to get along with herbivores.
I'm not saying we shouldn't have herbivore characters, just that I don't think we ought to have a herd--especially not when other areas are undercast. This is just my opinion, and may not be representative of the other wizzes.
